So I'm no expert, but here's what I think (GPU and PC system aside):Īny one of the Pimax VR HMDs are probably the ones with the best visuals, and not least the best (widest) FOV right now, at 200deg. I'm not a dev myself, so you'd have to ask developers about this. Games on the Oculus store you can only play on the Rift or the Rift S, so for that reason, it may be wise to go for a Rift S (even though the quality isn't as good as the Index). You'd want to add your game not just to SteamVR, but also to the Oculus store. It's been my best tech-purchase of the decade and I'm hyped to see this game in VR.Įdit: One important thing I'd like to add. For stuff like this, you should probably ask other game developers on /r/virtualreality or similar subreddits.Īnyway, super cool you are getting a VR headset and are thinking about porting. It's probably the easiest for you if you just let players use the VR controllers as regular controllers. For your game it's probably not necessary to include controller-tracking, since that is a lot of work to implement. So as a developer, it's probably easier to work from the controllers with the most functionalities, to be more future-proof.

Windows Mixed Reality and Oculus Rift S controllers are simple, whilst the Index controllers have more functionalities and are the most high end. Windows Mixed reality controllers, 2.Oculus Rift S controllers and 3. If you want to implement VR controller support, whether you want to include controller-tracking or just let players use it as a regular controller, you should know that there are multiple VR controllers. Some games let you use the motion controller abilities of the controller, but some just let you use the sticks and the buttons of the VR controllers, like an xbox controller. Steam surveys show that the Rift S is the most popular one right now (because it's still pretty good and relatively cheap, but as I said, the tracking, field of view and controllers are not as good as the Index).įor controller-reasons, it's also best to go for a Valve Index. I'd go for the Valve Index, because of the huge field of view, high resolution, infra-red tracking (the other headsets use optical tracking, which is less good) and superb controllers (which have much more functionalities than the WMR or Rift S controllers). The Valve Index is the highest end commercial VR headset on the market right now (around 1000 USD), below that, you have the Oculus Rift S (400 USD) and then there are some less used headsets like the Windows Mixed Reality headsets like the Samsung Odyssey+ and the now highly outdated Vive by HTC.
